For couples considering a honeymoon or anniversary in late 2026 or 2027, this is one Caribbean reopening worth watching.
Jamaica also offers another option at Sandals South Coast, where overwater bungalows sit above the Caribbean along the island’s quieter southern coast.
So even within Jamaica, there is more than one way to have the experience.
St. Lucia: An Overwater Experience With a Caribbean Icon
St. Lucia already has one of the Caribbean’s most recognizable landscapes: the Pitons rising dramatically above the sea.
It also offers an overwater option.
At Sandals Grande St. Lucian, overwater bungalows extend into the Caribbean from a peninsula surrounded by beautiful water and mountainous scenery.
That means the bungalow isn’t the only reason to make the trip.
St. Lucia can include rainforest adventures, waterfalls, sailing, volcanic landscapes, snorkeling, romantic resorts and those unforgettable views of the Pitons.
For couples who want an overwater stay but also want plenty to experience away from the resort, St. Lucia offers an appealing balance.
Mexico: Overwater Bungalows Without Crossing an Ocean
Mexico may not be the first place that comes to mind when you picture an overwater bungalow, but there are some intriguing options.
In the Riviera Maya, Palafitos Overwater Bungalows at El Dorado Maroma bring the experience to the Mexican Caribbean.

And then there’s the accessibility.
For many U.S. travelers, getting to the Riviera Maya is dramatically easier than reaching the Maldives or French Polynesia.
That makes Mexico an excellent example of what this entire series is about.
Sometimes you don’t have to travel farther.
You just have to know where to look.
Belize: Caribbean Water With a Different Kind of Adventure
Travel a little farther south and Belize offers another interpretation of the overwater experience.
Here, the appeal isn’t necessarily a sprawling luxury resort.
Belize is about the sea itself.

Panama: A Caribbean Overwater Escape Surrounded by Nature
Continue into Central America and you’ll find another destination many travelers don’t immediately associate with overwater bungalows: Panama.
The Bocas del Toro region, on Panama’s Caribbean coast, is known for tropical islands, clear water, mangroves and abundant marine life.
It is also home to several overwater accommodations.
One of the best-known upscale options is Nayara Bocas del Toro, an adults-only private-island resort offering overwater villas.
This is a very different atmosphere from a large Caribbean all-inclusive.
Think tropical nature, privacy, water activities and an intimate island setting.
For travelers who want the overwater experience but also want something less conventional, Panama can be a fascinating alternative.
And at this point, we’ve already traveled from Aruba and Jamaica through Mexico and Central America without ever needing to cross the Atlantic or Pacific.
But what if you’re willing to go farther?
That’s when the possibilities become extraordinary.
The Maldives: When Overwater Living Goes to Another Level
Now we’re going farther.
Much farther.
The Maldives has taken the overwater villa concept and elevated it into an entire category of luxury travel.
Scattered across the Indian Ocean, the Maldives consists of tiny islands and coral atolls surrounded by lagoons in shades of blue that barely look real.
Many resorts occupy their own private islands, with overwater villas stretching outward above the lagoon.
And the range of accommodations is extraordinary.
Some villas are beautifully simple and romantic.
Others have private infinity pools, waterslides, enormous outdoor decks, multiple bedrooms or even underwater spaces.

And that’s exactly why simply saying, “I want an overwater bungalow in the Maldives,” isn’t enough.
The resort matters enormously.
Two beautiful overwater villas can provide completely different vacations depending on the island, house reef, dining, activities, transfer requirements and overall atmosphere of the resort.
If you’re going to travel that far, choosing the right one matters.
French Polynesia: The Classic Overwater Bungalow Dream
And eventually we arrive at the place most travelers probably pictured when they started reading this article.
French Polynesia.
The modern overwater bungalow became famous here, and decades later the experience remains one of the great symbols of romantic travel.
Bora Bora is the superstar.
Picture opening the doors of your bungalow and seeing a brilliant turquoise lagoon with Mount Otemanu rising dramatically in the distance.
That’s the image on the postcards.
That’s the honeymoon photograph.
That’s the screensaver.
And yes, in person, Bora Bora really can look like that.
But French Polynesia is much more than Bora Bora.
Moorea offers dramatic mountains, beautiful lagoons and overwater accommodations while feeling somewhat different from its famous neighbor.
Other islands and atolls offer their own versions of the experience, allowing travelers to combine several islands rather than spending an entire vacation at one resort.
And that’s often how I prefer to think about French Polynesia.
The overwater bungalow may be the dream that gets you there.
But Polynesian culture, incredible landscapes, snorkeling, marine life, food and the sheer beauty of the islands are what turn it into a complete vacation.
An Overwater Bungalow Isn’t Just a Room Category
This is something travelers sometimes underestimate.
Choosing an overwater bungalow isn’t the same as deciding between an ocean-view room and a garden-view room.
The location of the bungalow can fundamentally change the experience.
Does it face sunrise or sunset?
How private is the deck?
Can you enter the water directly from your villa?
Is the water beneath it actually swimmable?
Is snorkeling available right from the bungalow?
Does it have a private pool?
How far is the bungalow from restaurants and the main resort?
And here’s another important consideration:
Do you actually want to spend your entire vacation over the water?
Sometimes the best itinerary combines experiences.
You might spend several nights in a beautiful beachfront room and then move into an overwater bungalow for the final portion of the trip.
You might combine an overwater stay at Aruba Ocean Villas with several nights elsewhere on Aruba.
Or island-hop through French Polynesia, experiencing different accommodations and landscapes along the way.
The most expensive room isn’t automatically the best choice for every night of the vacation.
